How to Survive Valentine’s Day if You’re Single

Today I’m sharing some suggestions on how to survive Valentine’s Day if you’re single. While it can seem like everyone else has an amazing partner and you’re on your own, that doesn’t mean that you can’t have fun on Valentine’s Day.

How to Survive Valentine's Day If you're Single

While Valentine’s Day can be a lot of fun if you’re in a relationship, it can be a tough day if you’re not in a relationship. Today I’m sharing some tips on how to survive Valentine’s Day if you’re single.

Have a girl’s night with your besties.

This year Valentine’s Day is on a Wednesday, so even if your best friends are in a relationship, they may not be doing anything their their significant others because it’s the middle of the week. Instead see if they’d be interested in having a girl’s night instead. Have a low key one with one person hosting and watch a cheesy romantic movie on Netflix and open a bottle of wine to share. Make it a fun night with your friends.

Practice self-care.

Spend the night at home taking care of yourself? Like baths but usually don’t have time to take them? Light a couple candles, put on a favorite playlist, throw in your favorite bath bomb, and enjoy some time to your self. Take an hour to do nothing but read your current book or a favorite one that you haven’t read in awhile. Spend some time meditating with the Headspace app and journaling. Go for a walk in your favorite park. Whatever it is that you enjoy and don’t do enough of, spend some time doing it on Valentine’s Day.

Cook yourself dinner.

I think we all have those meals that we absolutely love to eat, but we don’t make very often because they’re a lot of work. Splurge on yourself and make it on Valentine’s Day. Even though there will be a clean up needed afterwards, I find that making a dish that is a favorite of mine is so worth it.

If I’m feeling a bit down, getting in a workout always helps to make me feel better. Endorphins are for real. If you have a favorite group fitness class, sign up for it to reserve your spot. Feel like zoning out? Get on the treadmill or elliptical with a great playlist. Or maybe you’re more in the mood for lifting heavy things. Whatever you’re into, schedule in some time to hit the gym and get your workout in.

What’s your #1 tip for surviving Valentine’s Day if you’re single?

Origins Night-A-Mins Renewal Cream

Today I’m sharing a review of Origins Night-A-Mins Renewal Cream.

Origins Night A Mins Renewal Cream

I got a sample size of Origins Night-A-Mins Renewal Cream in the Sephora Favorites Beauty Sleep box. So far I’ve really liked all the products I’ve gotten in that box, so if you have a chance to get it, go for it. I think it’s a great price for quantity and quality of items in the box. Although it’s only a sample size, it has lasted me several weeks, so you really get an idea of how this product will work for you long term.

While the packaging doesn’t say that it’s specifically for moisturizing, that’s what I use it for. It’s a thicker cream, which is great because I feel like I need to use less of it than if it was a thinner cream. I found that it absorbed quickly into my skin without making my skin feel oily or greasy. As a result it doesn’t take long before I can put my makeup on top of it when I’m getting ready in the morning.

I think my favorite thing about the Origins Night-A-Mins Renewal Cream is the scent. While it’s not overpowering, it smells great. It’s more of a unique smell, but in a good way. Sometimes scents can cause a reaction with my sensitive skin, but this one didn’t.

All in all, I will definitely be buying this again once I’ve finished it. It moisturizes well (even in the winter months when my skin is typically drier) and the scent is great. Although it’s not an inexpensive product, I think it’s worth it. If you’re looking for a product to splurge on during the winter, I’d go with this one.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas

Today I’m sharing a post about Valentine’s Day gift ideas. Whether you’re celebrating with your significant other or a group of your girlfriends, I’m sure there’s something on this list that you’ll like.

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

To be honest, I never really used to liked Valentine’s Day. Either I was single or there was always a lot of pressure to make it a “perfect” Valentine’s Day if I was in a relationship. Either way it wasn’t much fun. Thankfully, over the last 5 or 6 years my perspective has changed and Valentine’s Day is actually fun. It might involved a night out with 5 or 6 of my friends for a girls night out or date night with my boyfriend.

I’m sharing some Valentine’s Day gift ideas today. I know I’d be happy if I received any of these things. It’s easy to go with the usual candy or chocolates, but putting a bit of time and effort into a gift makes all the difference. They vary from lip gloss, to a candle to a water bottle, so whatever your budget it, there’s something on this list that will fit it.

Valentine's Day Gift Ideas

  1. Jimmy Choo Illicit Flower (affiliate link) This is one of those gifts that will make the giftee think of you every time they put it on.
  2. Throw blanket (affiliate link) Valentine’s Day is very much still winter time here in Calgary, so I know that this throw will be used on those cold and chilly nights until spring comes.
  3. Heart necklace (affiliate link) Super cute while not being too over the top, this necklace is the perfect thing to add to an outfit.
  4. Butter London Lippy lip gloss (affiliate link) If you’re anything like me, there’s no such thing as too many lip glosses.
  5. Slippers (affiliate link) Along with the throw, sometimes you need something to keep your feet warm around the house.
  6. Voluspa Prosecco Rose candle (affiliate link) It’s hard to go wrong with a travel candle when you need a little something to make your hotel room feel a but more like home.
  7. S’well water bottle (affiliate link) Just like with lip gloss, I always seem to be looking for a water bottle, so I’m always happy to have an extra one around the house.

How to Deal with the Winter Blues

Today I’m sharing how I deal with the winter blues. It’s easy to get down when it feels like winter and the cold and snow that comes with it will never end. But today I’m sharing a couple ways that I deal with it.

How to Deal with the Winter Blues

Embrace winter

If you live somewhere cold and snowy 6 or 7 months out of the year like I do, there’s nothing you can do about winter – it happens whether or not you want it to. As a result, I’ve found that I’m happier if I decided to embrace winter, and all the cold, snow, and long nights that it brings.

Taking advantage of the mountains that are only an hour long drive away from Calgary and snowboarding or skiing, grabbing my skates and going for a skate at my neighborhood rink, going sledding, or renting some snowshoes and exploring a park are just a few of the ideas that I’ve tried over the years.

Stay social

How to Deal with the Winter Blues Friends

While it might be tempting to hunker down and not leave the house when it’s cold, snowy, and it’s dark at 5:30, it’s important to not isolate yourself and stay in touch with friends. I know that a night out with my friends – or even a night in watching a movie and drinking a glass of wine – is so much fun and lifts my spirits.

Even getting out of the house is helpful. It’s easy to get caught up in my own head when I’m spending a lot of time at home, and getting out there and interacting with some of my favorite people always helps. Even just having plans to look forward to helps sometimes when I’m feeling down.

Create a cozy space

Create a Cozy Space

Create a space in your house that’s just for you. It could be a cozy chair and a book shelf with some of your favorite books or it could be an entire room with some of your favorite things like a blanket, candles or music. Whatever you decide on, put it together and spend time there when you’re feeling down. Being surrounded by the things that make you happy will help to improve your mood.

Workout Date with a Friend

Making sure that you’re staying physically active is always something that helps me feel better. Whether that’s a walk outside around my neighborhood after a pretty snowfall, or making it to the gym to workout or take a fitness class, it all gets me moving. Of course the post workout endorphins are always a good way for me to get into a better mood.

Get help

If you suspect that the winter blues are more than that, and you’ve been feeling down for more than just a couple days, reach out and make a doctor’s appointment. There might be something else going on (physically or mentally), and it’s important to deal with it if that’s the case. It’s not worth suffering through if you’re not feeling well.

What’s one thing that you like to do during the winter to improve your mood? Tell me about it in the comments.

Face, Skincare, Toner

Biotherm Biosource 24 Hour Hydrating and Softening Toner

Today I’m sharing my review of the Biotherm Biosource 24 Hour Hydrating and Softening Toner.

Biotherm Biosource 24 Hour Hydrating and Softening Toner

I was in the market for a new toner a couple months ago, so I checked out the Sephora site to see what they had. I was quickly drawn to the Biotherm Biosource 24 Hour Hydrating and Softening Toner because it had some good reviews and it was developed for dry skin. During the winter I tend to get dry skin on my chin, so I was hoping that this toner would help, or at least not make it any worse.

I have to admit that the packaging is really pretty. I really like the pink, silver, and white together. In fact it’s pretty enough to leave out on my counter or dresser even when I’m not using it. According to the labeling it’s paraben free and suitable for sensitive skin, which is perfect because that’s what I have.

In terms of using it, I put two pumps on a cotton pad and then wipe in on my face and neck. I like using cotton pads over balls because I think they stay together better and I have more surface area to use, but really either one would work for this.

Now that I’ve been using Biotherm’s Biosource 24 Hour Hydrating and Softening Toner for the last few months, I can say that it hasn’t caused my skin to dry out, even though it’s currently the middle of winter, when I’m most susceptible to dry skin. So far I’ve used about half of the bottle, and I’m expecting to get a couple more months of use out of it using it once or twice a day.

The is available at your local Sephora store or online for $25.

Have you used Biotherm Biosource 24 Hour Hydrating and Softening Toner before? What’s your favorite toner?

Philosophy Purity Made Simple Mask

Today I’m sharing my thoughts on the Philosophy Purity Made Simple Mask after using it for a few months now.

Philosophy Purity Made Simple Mask

Philosophy has a great reputation when it comes to skincare. I have yet to use one of their products that I didn’t really like. Needless to say, I had high expectations when I started using the Philosophy Purity Made Simple Mask. I’m happy to say that it’s lived up to my expectations. According to the packaging, this mask contains sea salts, marine extracts, and vitamin E. I know vitamin E is good for skin, so I was excited when I saw that was included.

First off, my favorite thing about this mask is that it’s super quick to use. You only have to leave it on for 60 seconds before you take it off. As a result, it’s perfect for those nights when I’m tired and ready to get into bed. Because it’s not on your skin for too long, it doesn’t harden like a lot of other masks, so it’s easier to take off. I typically use it after cleanser but before toner and moisturizer.

As far as how my skin feels after I’ve used it, my face feels soft and clean without any dry or tight feeling. I hate when my skin feels like that after any skincare product, and don’t think it’s good for my skin either. I’ve found that it’s gentle enough for my skin to use a couple times every week.

While I still have about half of it left, I already know that I’ll be buying this again. I like that it take a minimal amount of time to do for a mask. I also like how it leaves my skin feeling clean. You can find the Philosophy Purity Made Simple Mask at your local Sephora store or online here for $25 (affiliate like).

My Current Netflix Favorites

Today I’m sharing some of my favorite binge worthy TV shows on Netflix.

My Current Netflix Favorites

The Anne of Green Gables books are some of my favorite childhood books. I was so excited when I found out that they were creating another series based on the books. I think the creators did a great job and I loved watching it. Matthew was my favorite character besides Anne. R H Thomson who plays Matthew was the perfect choice. They’re currently filming season 2, which I’m super excited about. I can’t wait to watch it.

Downton Abbey

While I only watched an episode here and there when it was on PBS because I could never remember when it was on, I’ve really enjoyed watching it on Netflix. The estate is beautiful, and between the house and the surrounding yard, I almost feel like it’s a whole other character on the show. I’ve found that it’s also funnier than I was expecting. The characters tend to get themselves into interesting situations.

Halt and Catch Fire

If you enjoy tech and start ups at all, I’m pretty sure that you’ll like Halt and Catch Fire. It focuses on 5 people in the early 80’s who are all involved in the emerging tech world in some way. The series ends in the early 90’s with the same 5 characters. The series ended just recently, which I’m sad about, but I’m watching it from the beginning again.

The Good Wife

I don’t think this show requires a description because it’s been so popular. It has a host of amazing actors and some great guest stars too as lawyers and judges. As with any legal drama, the storylines get pretty interesting in regards to the cases that Lockhart Gardner deal with.

Mad Men

At first I didn’t understand the hype around Mad Men, but I have to admit that it’s all true. Everything is so good – the acting, writing, costume design – it just works perfectly. The 60’s were such an interesting time, and putting an office full of interesting characters in that setting makes for some great TV. If for some reason you haven’t watched it yet, it’s definitely worth it.

Leave a comment below with one of your favorite binge worthy shows on Netflix. I’d love to add some more shows to my list to watch.

Blotting Papers, Face, Skincare

Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets

Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets

Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets are probably the skincare product that I’ve been using the longest. I started using them in university 15 years ago. That makes me feel old now that I’m typing it out! Needless to say, I must love it if I’ve been using it that long. I tend to think of teenaged breakouts and acne when I think of Clean and Clear, but these are one of their products that have a more grown up use.

Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets exactly what they sound like – oil absorbing sheets that help to get rid of oil on your face. They’re blue and turn transparent when they pick up oil – without leaving any blue residue behind. To avoid moving around any makeup that I have on (or taking it off), I dab instead of rub it on my skin. They’re the perfect size for your face – big enough that I have enough room to get all areas of my face without being too big that I feel like I’m wasting it.

These are perfect for keeping in your bag because the packaging is so small and compact. Because they’re so easy to keep around, they’re perfect for touching up throughout the day. They’re especially great during the summer when I’m usually a bit more shiny. Speaking of packaging, it’s really easy to get just one sheet out instead of a bunch. There’s adhesive on the inside of the cover, so when you open it, one and only one sheet automatically gets pulled out. Such a little thing that makes getting them out so much easier.

Clean and Clear Oil Absorbing Sheets are available at your local drugstore for $6 or online here (affiliate link). I love that these are at such an affordable price point and they work so well.

Flora By Gucci

Flora by Gucci

Back in 2006 I went on a trip to Europe. In France I found an amazing perfume and wore it for years until I finished it. I then went on a search for a new signature scent. It may have taken awhile, but I found one after a few years.

My brother had given me a gift card for Sephora for my birthday a few birthdays ago, so I went into the store hoping to find something that smelled great and appealed to me. When I came across Flora by Gucci, I know it was the one. It’s been my go to fragrance ever since.

Flora has both floral and citrus notes and is a strong fragrance that lasts all day. Despite the strong scent I don’t think that it’s overwhelming. I also find that it’s sweet and feminine. It gives me a confidence boost when I’m wearing it.

I’ve gotten a ton of compliments on it over the years, as well as questions about what it is that I’m wearing. I think it works great in both the winter and summer months so I’m able to wear it year round.

In terms of packaging, I absolutely love the bottle that it comes in. It’s pretty and classic looking to me. It’s one of those bottles that you like to have out to see.

While it’s definitely not a cheap price, I think it’s worth it for a perfume that makes me feel great when I’m wearing it. Needless to say, Flora by Gucci will be a fragrance that I will be buying again.

Flora by Gucci is available at Sephora for $95 or online here (affiliate link).

Skintimate Signature Scents Shave Gel in Strawberry Tangerine Twist

Today I’m reviewing the Skintimate Signature Scents Shave Gel in Strawberry Tangerine Twist.

Skintimate Signature Scents Shave Gel in Strawberry Tangerine Twist

I have a love/hate relationship with shave gels. Some are great and allow me to get a close shave, while others just cause irritation and my skin feels terrible for hours after I’ve used it. Having sensitive skin is a pain – literally. I’ve come to realize that I have to be picky about the shave gels that I try.

Thankfully, this one the Skintimate Signature Scents Shave Gel in Strawberry Tangerine Twist is a favorite for me. It lathers up really well, lubricates my skin so that I don’t get nicks, leaves my skin feeling hydrated, and smells really good to boot. I have to be careful with products that have scents sometimes, but I didn’t have any reactions with this shave gel.

According to the Skintimate website, it contains vitamin E and olive butter. I’m all about getting as much moisture as possible into the skin on my legs because they’re always dry, and they’re typically even worse during the winter months. With all the dry air here, that’s not surprising. I find that if I’m using the right shave gel, moisturizer will absorb into my skin easier. That was the case with this shave gel.

One tip for those of you who also have sensitive skin: make sure you switch out your razor on a regular basis. While you might think that it’s your shave gel causing problems with your skin, it could actually be a dull razor.

Skintimate Signature Scents Shave Gel in Strawberry Tangerine Twist is available at your local drugstore for about $4 or online here (affiliate link).

What’s your favorite shave gel? Tell me about it in the comments below.
